Have you ever read an epistolary novel? Every once in a while, I will come across one. The key feature of the epistolary novel is that it uses materials like letters, diary entries, notes, or emails to share the story with readers. In a traditional epistolary, all or almost all of the novel is told through these forms of writing. Meet Me at the Museum by Anne Youngson is a quietly engaging epistolary. A friendship between a married farmer in England and a widowed museum curator in Denmark blossoms through letters sent to each other where they share their life stories, hopes, and dreams. The story is as lovely as its cover. Another epistolary novel I read this year is a classic tale for young readers called Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster. It's a coming-of-age story about a girl trying to make her way toward a better life through education. The story is told entirely through letters. If you have not explored epistolary reading, give one a try.
