Book Recommendation: Writing Tools by Roy Peter Clark

For anyone wishing to improve their writing, I recommend a book by Roy Peter Clark called Writing Tools (10th Anniversary Edition): 55 Essential Strategies for Every Writer.

It’s packed with usable techniques and formatted into bite-sized chapters, each of which ends with exercises in writing, reading, and observing. He draws examples from a wide array of fiction and nonfiction, journalism and literature.  I also enjoyed his book The Glamour of Grammar, which I read several years ago.

I’ll be tucking both of these in my bookshelf and probably reaching for Writing Tools often over the next few months as I wrap up the cozy Massachusetts mystery I’m writing!
